Features and purposes of teflon
1.Non-adhesion: Almost no materials adhere to teflon coatings. Even a very thin teflon coating presents very good non-adhesion.
2.Heat resistance: Teflon has excellent heat resistance and low-temperature resistance. It can resist a high temperature up to 300℃, and be used continuously at 240 – 260℃. With high thermal stability, it can still function without embrittlement at a chilling temperature and does not melt at a high temperature.
3.Sliding property: The teflon coating has a low friction coefficient which changes just within 0.05-0.15 when the load slides.
4.Humidity resistance: The teflon coating keeps no water or oil on its surface, or solutions during production or operation. If a small amount of dirt adheres to it surface, you just need to wipe it off. This reduces downtime, saves labour hours and improves working efficiency.
5.Abrasion resistance: It has excellent abrasion resistance even under a high load and has both abrasion resistance and Non-adhesion under a certain load.
6. Corrosion resistance: Almost free of corrosion by any medicine, Teflon can protect parts from any kind of chemical corrosion.
The teflon coating is a non-adhesive inorganic coating with high temperature resistance that can be used for iron, steel, aluminum and ceramic. With resistance against a temperature up to 350℃ or even higher, it is widely used in various industries such as a metallurgy, petroleum industry, natural gas exploitation, aviation and aerospace. Besides high temperature resistance, it features heat shock resistance and abrasion resistance. A teflon coating can be used to conduct surface modification for metals and various fireproof materials, so as to improve the usability of the base material, save energy and prolong the service life of a metal base material by more than 1-2 times.
The surface treatment with teflon has been widely used for products like high-temperature electric irons, electric cookers, microwave ovens, and ovenware. With very good metal adhesion and high hardness, it has improved strength after high-temperature calcination and does not crack. It is colorful and also features good oil resistance, acid resistance and alkali resistance.
Six methods of teflon surface treatment
1.plasma treatment: The plasma treatment has two machine options: one is vacuum reel-to-reel plasma cleaning machine, and the other is high power corona machine. The plasma cleaning machine has a big advantage of not affecting the material itself but just improving the teflon surface roughness. Among all kinds of methods, plasma treatment is the ideal one. However, it has a certain technical difficulties and cannot be performed by many companies. Because a lot of customers requires plasma treatment, to solve teflon related technical problems, Yijin Hardware’s technicians have carried out various machine, gas and power supply tests and finally achieve about 48 dyne for the teflon surface, which can well solve the printing adhesion related problems for customers. If higher effect requirements are needed for teflon treatment, vacuum reel to reel is preferred in coordination with oxygen treatment. This can also lead to good effects, with a slightly higher cost. The corona machine is not expensive but its effects are not that good, although customers’ printing related requirements can be met.
2. High-temperature fusing: High-temperature fusing allows the teflon surface to acquire good modification. Even for the plasma treatment, a higher temperature usually leads to better effects. The application of high-temperature fusing can make the material surface have obvious changes. If some powder like silicon dioxide is added, it is easier to improve adhesive strength for the surface. However, there is an obvious disadvantage: teflon tends to deform at high temperature. In addition, teflon releases a toxic substance called perfluoroisobutylene at high temperature. Although using this method can significantly improve adhesive strength for the teflon surface, this method is not recommended.
3.Surface oxidation: Performing this method on the teflon surface for treatment can improve its adhesive strength. Gases like air, oxygen or ozone conducts oxidation treatment for the telfon surface at high temperature. This is a method with the most significant effects and easy to operate, without any harmful materials produced. The disadvantage of this method is that high temperature oxidation changes both color and shape of the telfon surface. Besides, tefon is provided in the form of reels, not suitable for this method.
4.Radiation grafting: Radiation grafting can also improve roughness for the teflon surface. This method has both high efficiency and good effects. However, it changes the the surface gloss and long-time radiation is harmful to health, so it is not recommended.
Summary: There are a lot of surface treatment methods for telfon, but non can achieve perforce effects due to its properties. Without the cost considered, using the plasma cleaning machine actually is the best treatment, because ideal effects can be achieved without changing material properties. Telfon is one of the high polymer materials hard to treat. If you have the need of CNC turning for telfon parts, please send your prototype to us, and we will conduct tests for you. With rich experience acquired from lots of telfon machining cases, Yijin Hardware will give you the satisfactory effects.
