Sheet Metal Fabrication Quality Control: What China Manufacturers Actually Inspect

sheet metal fabrication quality control

Inhalt

An approved sample shows that a fabricator can make one part to the drawing under controlled conditions, but the sourcing risk sits in the production lots that follow. Sheet metal fabrication quality control closes the gap between sample and lot by placing a measured check at each stage of the job, from material receipt to shipment.

Sheet metal variation starts at predictable points in the process, so the placement of each check matters more than the total number of parts inspected.

Stage placement is therefore the first thing to test when qualifying a China fabricator, ahead of price, capacity, or delivery terms. A supplier with stage-based control can show the check, instrument, and record behind every stage, and share those records on request.

What Does Sheet Metal Fabrication Quality Control Check at Each Stage?

Sheet metal fabrication quality control runs across six stages: incoming material, first article, in-process, final dimensional, surface and coating, and shipment. Each stage pairs the features most likely to shift with a matched instrument and a record the buyer can request.

The cost of a deviation rises at every stage it passes. A bend angle corrected at first article costs one part. If the same deviation is found after powder coating, it affects the full lot, and re-bending a coated part can crack the finish.

Most instruments in Table 1 are common at fabricators that supply industrial buyers, though some shops work without a coordinate measuring machine, or CMM. At any supplier worth shortlisting, each row maps to a named check and a record. Asking each supplier to complete these six rows puts quotes on the same inspection basis.

What Happens During Incoming Material Inspection?

Sheet metal quality control starts before the first cut. Grade and temper set how the material behaves in every later step. An out-of-specification sheet carries its deviation into each part cut from it.

The first check compares the material certificate with the coil or sheet tag. A matching heat number ties the sheet to a mill heat. Recording it on the job traveler carries that link to every shipped lot.

Inspectors measure thickness with a micrometer at several points along the sheet edges. Thickness changes the bend allowance and the angle each stroke produces. A sheet at the low end of its tolerance shifts flange lengths and opens bend angles.

A hardness test confirms temper. Aluminum 5052-H32 forms a tight inside radius cleanly, but the harder Aluminum 5052-H38 can crack on the same bend. Bend lines running across the grain lower that risk.

What Does First Article Inspection Confirm?

The first article inspection measures every drawing characteristic on the first part from a new or changed process before the production lot runs. It confirms that the program, tooling, and setup produce the drawing as written. It also verifies the bend sequence since a changed sequence can shift flange positions.

Repeat lots on an unchanged process and get a first-piece check at setup instead of a full first article. Four events call for the full inspection:

  • A new part number
  • A drawing revision
  • New tooling or a changed press brake program
  • A change of material source

The buyer should review and sign off the report before production release. The signed first article then becomes the reference point for every later lot.

Yijin-Lösung runs first article checks on Zeiss CMMs and image measuring systems, drawn from 281 testing instruments.

Which In-Process Checks Matter Most for Sheet Metal Parts?

Most sheet metal variation forms during bending and welding, so in-process checks run at the press brake and the weld station. Operators check the first parts of each run and repeat the checks at set intervals. Sheet metal parts inspection at this stage covers bends, flatness, holes, and welds.

Bend angle and springback

Sheet metal springs back after the press brake releases. The Fabricator’s springback data puts Stainless Steel 304 at 2 to 3 degrees when the inside radius equals the thickness. Cold-rolled steel springs back 0.75 to 1 degree under the same conditions.

Operators check the first bends with an angle gauge and adjust the program before the lot runs. A 1-degree deviation on one flange can stop an enclosure from closing.

Flatness after cutting and welding

Weld heat pulls thin panels out of flatness as the weld metal shrinks. Weld distortion guidance from TWI, The Welding Institute, ties shrinkage to deposited weld volume and links large deposits to buckling in thin sections.

A reading taken before welding says little about the finished part. The flatness check happens after welding, on a surface plate with feeler gauges. Large laser-cut panels with heavy cutouts can also bow, so unwelded parts get the same check.

Cut edges get their own check before forming. Operators remove burrs and dross so that they do not mark the tooling or carry through to the finish.

Hole position relative to bends

Holes close to a bend line can stretch into an oval, and holes farther out still move with any bend allowance error. Inspectors measure hole position after bending since a hole that sits true on the flat blank can still miss its mating fastener. An image measuring system reads hole patterns on one face, and patterns across bends go to the CMM.

Weld quality

Inspectors check each weld visually for porosity, undercut, burn-through, and spatter, and measure fillet size with a weld gauge. An oversized fillet adds heat and distortion, and it can interfere with a mating part.

How is Final Dimensional Inspection Performed?

Final sheet metal inspection confirms that the production lot still matches the approved first article. Inspectors measure the critical dimensions on sampled parts and compare each value with the drawing.

A CMM handles 3D features and positional tolerances, with flexible parts held in a fixture so readings repeat. An image measuring system reads flat profiles faster, which suits larger lots of small flat parts.

Achievable tolerances depend on material, thickness, and the number of bends between features. Each bend adds variation. A breakdown of Toleranzen in der Blechbearbeitung by process gives realistic starting ranges for drawing callouts.

The sampling plan depends on lot size and on how critical each characteristic is to fit or function. Writing the plan into the purchase order means that the buyer and the supplier inspect to the same rule.

Which Surface and Coating Checks Matter?

On coated or plated parts, the finish sets corrosion life and cosmetic acceptance, and both are hard to rework after shipment. Many sheet metal parts ship bare or with a simple protective finish. These checks apply only when the drawing calls for a coating.

Coating thickness and adhesion

Plating builds up on outside edges, and powder coat can pull thin over sharp edges. Both finishes run thin in inside corners, so readings taken only on flat faces miss the extremes.

A magnetic or eddy current gauge reads powder coat, and an X-ray film thickness tester reads thin plated layers. Edge and corner readings show the full range, and a cross-hatch tape test on a sample part or test panel checks adhesion.

Salt spray testing and its limits

Coated samples run in a salt spray tester for a set number of hours, and inspectors record any corrosion at the end. Cabinet hours do not translate directly into years of field life, and a long test adds days to delivery. Test hours work best as a comparison tool, specified only when the application needs it.

What Documentation Should Ship with Each Order?

Records let a buyer audit a supplier’s quality control without visiting the factory. A complete set means incoming inspection can confirm a lot without remeasuring every part. It also builds a dated history of each lot, which speeds up any later investigation.

Sheet metal records add bend angle and weld checks that turned and milled parts rarely need. The companion guide to CNC machining quality control in China applies the same stage logic to machined parts.

Two documents belong with every order: the material certificate and the Certificate of Conformance (CoC). The other four depend on the part, the tolerance, and the finish. Each one gives the buyer a check to run at receipt.

Table 2: Quality documents for sheet metal orders

Dokument When to request it What to check on it
Material certificate Every order A copy of the original mill certificate, with grade, temper, and heat number matching the drawing and the lot
Certificate of Conformance Every order Part number, drawing revision, and lot quantity match the purchase order
First article inspection report New part, revision, or process change Every drawing characteristic listed with a measured value and a signature
Dimensional inspection report Production lots with tight tolerances Measured values against nominal and tolerance for each critical dimension, plus the sample size checked
Coating thickness report Coated or plated parts Lowest reading meets the minimum thickness on the drawing
Salt spray test report Outdoor or corrosive service, when specified Test hours and acceptance criteria were agreed upon before production

What Should Buyers Ask a China Supplier About Sheet Metal Quality Control?

A short list of questions shows whether a supplier controls the process or sorts parts at the end of the line. Specific answers backed by sample records carry more weight than a certificate on a website.

Calibration deserves its own question because a measurement only means something when the instrument traces back to national standards. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology describes this unbroken chain of calibrations as metrological traceability. Calibration records show the last check, the reference used,  and the next due date, and the label on each shop-floor gauge should match.

A credible answer names the stage, the team, the instrument, or the record behind each claim. Table 3 works as a scoring sheet for any China fabricator during supplier visits or video audits.

Table 3: Questions to ask and what a credible answer includes

Question to ask What a credible answer includes
Which stages are inspected, and by whom? Named stages, operator checks during forming and welding, and a separate inspection team for first article and final checks
Which instruments check the critical dimensions on the drawing? Named equipment such as a CMM or image measuring system
How are instruments calibrated? Dated calibration records traceable to national standards
Which records ship with each lot? A sample Certificate of Conformance and dimensional report on request
How are drawing revisions controlled between lots? Revision-controlled drawings at each station and a record of the revision each lot was built to
How are press brake programs kept for repeat orders? Programs saved under the part number and drawing revision, with the tooling and bend sequence for each setup
How are nonconforming parts handled? Segregation, root cause analysis, and a corrective action record

Holding Every Lot to the Approved Sample

Consistency between an approved sample and every production lot comes from checks placed at the stages that introduce sheet metal variation, each backed by a record. A supplier that can show those records stage by stage, from the material certificate to the final dimensional report, gives the buyer evidence rather than assurances. Asking for that evidence before the first order, not after the first deviation, keeps quality control a planned cost rather than a recovery effort.

Yijin Solution’s sheet metal fabrication services cover custom parts from prototype to production. Every inspection stage in Table 1 runs in-house, from hardness testing at receiving to Zeiss CMM checks at first article and salt spray testing for coated parts. The documents in Table 2 are supplied to match each order’s requirements.

Engineering teams can upload drawings with critical dimensions marked for a free DFM review and quote before the first production lot runs.

Sheet Metal Fabrication Quality Control FAQs

What tolerance applies when a sheet metal drawing shows none?

An untoleranced dimension takes the general tolerance class named in the title block. ISO 2768 general tolerances are a widely used reference, and class m, the medium class, is a common default. Without a named class, the fabricator applies its own shop standard, so buyers who want predictable results must state the class.

What is the difference between quality control and quality assurance?

Quality control measures parts to find deviations from the drawing. Quality assurance designs the processes, training, and records that prevent deviations before production starts. On a sheet metal job, a locked press brake program is assurance, and the angle check on the first bend is control.

Does inspection reporting add cost or lead time?

Inspection reporting adds cost and time that scale with the number of characteristics measured and the reports requested. A full first article report takes the longest because every feature gets a measured value and a new CMM program. Buyers can hold costs down by requesting full reports at the first article and sampled reports for repeat lots.

What should a buyer mark on a drawing to get useful inspection reports?

A drawing produces useful inspection reports when it marks the critical characteristics, names the required report types, and shows where coating thickness is measured. Numbered balloons tie each dimension to a line in the report so that the buyer and the supplier compare the same values.
