One HVAC drawing sent to a local shop and an overseas fabricator can come back as parts that differ in thickness, coating, and fit. The gap usually comes from specifications the local shop applies by habit, such as gauge numbers, sheet grade, or a plain “galvanized” callout, that the drawing never states. Stating material, thickness, seam method, and finish in measurable terms on the drawing close that gap, so every shop works to the same specification.
HVAC sheet metal fabrication is the cutting, bending, joining, and finishing of thin sheet into heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment components rather than building ductwork. Those four specifications determine whether an access panel seals, a rooftop housing resists weather, and a plenum bolts up the first time.
In this guide, buyers will find what to specify for each, from sheet grade to the RFQ checks for China sourcing.
What Does HVAC Sheet Metal Fabrication Cover?
Fabricated HVAC parts sit inside or around the equipment, from the cabinet shell to the brackets that hold coils and motors. Each of the seven common part types below has one feature that decides its quality.
| Tipo de pieza | Function in the unit | Common material | Feature that drives quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equipment housings | Enclose fans, coils, and compressors | Galvanized steel, powder-coated | Panel flatness and sealed seams |
| Access panels | Allow service access | Galvanized steel or aluminum | Latch and gasket hole position |
| Plenums | Distribute air to or from the air handler | Acero galvanizado | Airtight corner joints |
| Transitions | Join openings of different sizes or shape | Galvanized steel or aluminum | Flange dimensions |
| Damper blades and frames | Regulate airflow | Galvanized or stainless steel | Flatness and blade clearance |
| Brackets and rails | Support coils, motors, and controls | Galvanized or stainless steel | Bend angle and hole position |
| Drain pans | Collect condensate | Stainless steel or aluminum | Watertight corners |
HVAC ductwork fabrication versus OEM equipment parts
HVAC ductwork fabrication serves building installation, and contractors size and fit it on site. OEM equipment parts follow a fixed drawing, run in batches, and fit an assembly line. The quality focus therefore moves from field fit to repeatability across production lots.
Which Materials Suit HVAC Components?
Most HVAC parts use galvanized steel, which balances cost, formability, and corrosion life for indoor and rooftop service. Aluminum and stainless steel earn their higher cost in wet, coastal, or hygienic zones. A separate guide compares acero galvanizado frente a aluminioĀ in more detail.
| Material | Resistencia a la corrosión | Formabilidad | Common HVAC use | Watch point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galvanized steel with Z275 coating | Good indoors, moderate outdoors | Bien | Housings, plenums, & brackets | Coating mass sets outdoor life |
| Aluminio 5052 | Good, no red rust | Very good, more springback | Light panels, transitions, & coastal units | Lower stiffness on large panels |
| Acero inoxidable 304 | Very good indoors and in mild outdoor air | Good; work hardens | Drain pans, coil supports, & hygienic units | Higher cost; galvanic risk beside galvanized parts in wet zones |
| Acero inoxidable 316 | Highest of the four in salt and chemical air | Good; work hardens. | Coastal and industrial exhaust parts | Highest cost; specify only when exposure calls for it |
The same grades carry over to brackets and frames, covered under steel sheet metal fabrication.
Why thickness should be called out in millimeters
One gauge number gives three different thicknesses, depending on whether the sheet is galvanized steel, uncoated steel, or aluminum. China mills stock metric sheets, so an 18-gauge galvanized callout can arrive as 1.2 mm stock that flexes in the unit.
GalvInfo Note 1.1Ā from the International Zinc Association explains that galvanized gauge numbers were never standardized. A millimeter value with a tolerance gives every supplier the same target.
| Indicador | Acero galvanizado | Uncoated steel | Aluminio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 | 0.70 mm | 0.61 mm | 0.51 mm |
| 22 | 0.85 mm | 0.76 mm | 0.64 mm |
| 20 | 1.01 mm | 0.91 mm | 0.81 mm |
| 18 | 1.31 mm | 1.21 mm | 1.02 mm |
| 16 | 1.61 mm | 1.52 mm | 1.29 mm |
Coating mass on galvanized parts
A plain āgalvanizedā callout leaves the zinc mass open, and zinc mass sets outdoor corrosion life, so a lighter-coated sheet can be quoted cheaper for the same part.
China mills typically sell coating mass under metric Z designations, while US drawings often use G designations. The same GalvInfo note puts Z275 at about 275 g/m² of zinc across both sides, equivalent to G90, and Z180 at about 180 g/m², equivalent to G60.
Z275 is a common callout for outdoor housings, and stating it on the drawing fixes the zinc weight every supplier quotes.
How are HVAC Sheet Metal Parts Made?
Four fabrication steps turn a flat sheet into a finished HVAC part. Each step sets one detail the drawing should control.
1. Laser cutting
Fiber lasers cut blanks, holes, and vent slot patterns from flat sheet with no hard tooling, so design changes cost little between prototype rounds.
Laser cutting also removes zinc along the cut edge of the galvanized sheet. On outdoor parts, edge sealing or a coating after cutting belongs on the drawing since red rust tends to start at bare edges.
2. CNC bending
Press brakes form the flanges and returns on each panel. Bend angle consistency controls whether panels meet the frame without gaps.
Aluminum springs back more than steel, so fabricators check bend angles on the first parts of each setup. For steel, the inside bend radius commonly starts at one material thickness, with the minimum set by grade and tooling.
3. Spot welding
Spot welds join panels and stiffeners without a continuous seam. Weld spacing affects panel stiffness, rattle under fan vibration, and air leakage between welds.
Spot welds thin or strip zinc at the electrode marks. Welded galvanized parts left unpainted for wet or outdoor service call for a zinc-rich touch-up note.
4. Seaming and sealing
Folded seams, clinching, and rivets join parts without heat so that the thin sheet stays flat and the zinc stays intact. Sealant or gaskets then close the air path through the joint.
Gaps at seams and coil block-offs let conditioned air leak or bypass the coil, and an unsealed seam in a cold section can collect condensation. The seam method and sealant, therefore, belong on the drawing.
What Tolerances Do HVAC Sheet Metal Parts Need?
ISO 2768-1Ā general tolerances cover most HVAC parts once the drawing names a class. Tight callouts belong only on features that mate with gaskets, latches, or coil frames, and the achievable band depends on material and part size.
A hole dimensioned across a bend holds less closely than one dimensioned on the same flat face since the measurement picks up bend angle and radius variation.
Large thin panels tend to oil can, flexing in and out under light pressure. Stiffening beads or return flanges control that at a lower cost than thicker sheet.
Class m covers most housing and plenum dimensions. Class f fits flat, with laser-cut features such as latch and insert holes.
| Nominal size | Class f, fine | Class m, medium | Typical HVAC use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over 6 to 30 mm | ±0,1 mm | ±0,2 mm | Latch holes & insert holes |
| Over 30 to 120 mm | ±0,15 mm | ±0,3 mm | Flange widths & bracket legs |
| Over 120 to 400 mm | ±0,2 mm | ±0,5 mm | Access panels & damper blades |
| Over 400 to 1000 mm | ±0,3 mm | ±0.8 mm | Housing sides & plenum walls |
| Over 1000 to 2000 mm | ±0,5 mm | ±1.2 mm | Large cabinet panels |
How Should HVAC Parts Be Finished for Indoor and Outdoor Units?
Exposure sets the finish more than the part type does. Indoor dry parts rarely need more than galvanizing, while rooftop and coastal parts need a coating system over the zinc.
Outdoor units face UV, rain, and daily temperature swings, and coastal sites add salt that speeds zinc loss. A coating system pairs pretreatment with a powder or paint layer, so the zinc protects cut edges and scratches while the topcoat takes the weathering. Condensate zones inside the unit stay wet without the UV load, so stainless steel or aluminum often replaces galvanized steel there.
| Exposure | Base material | Acabado | Nota |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indoor, dry | Acero galvanizado | Bare or powder coat | Bare is the lowest cost when appearance does not matter |
| Indoor, condensate zone | Stainless Steel 304 or aluminum | Passivated or bare | Drain pans and coil supports |
| Outdoor rooftop or condenser | Z275 galvanized steel | Pretreatment plus polyester powder coat | Polyester resists UV fading outdoors |
| Coastal or industrial air | Aluminum 5052 or Stainless Steel 316 | Powder-coated or bare stainless | Compare coatings by salt spray before production |
Powder adhesion on galvanized steel depends on pretreatment that removes mill oil and passivation, and galvanized coil from China commonly ships passivated. Gas released from the zinc during curing can also leave pinholes, which a degassing preheat reduces.
How are HVAC Sheet Metal Parts Inspected?
Five checks matter more for HVAC components than for general sheet metal work because they tie to corrosion life, panel fit, and water handling.
| Comprobar | Piezas | How it is measured | Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zinc coating mass | Galvanized housings, plenums & brackets | Mill certificate plus coating thickness readings | Material certificate, coating report |
| Large-panel flatness | Housing sides & access panels | Surface plate and feeler gauge | In-process check sheet |
| Flange and latch-hole position | Access panels & transitions | Check the fixture, image measuring system, or CMM | Dimensional report |
| Watertightness | Drain pans | Water fill, hold, and full-drain check | Test record |
| Powder coat thickness and adhesion | Coated outdoor parts | Coating thickness reading net of the zinc layer; cross-cut adhesion check | Coating report |
Zinc coating mass cannot be judged by eye, since Z180 and Z275 sheets look the same on arrival. A handheld coating thickness gauge gives a quick check against the mill certificate on receipt.
Z275 measures about 20 microns of zinc per side, and Z180 about 13 microns, so readings well under 20 microns point to a lighter coating than the drawing called for.
What Should Buyers Check Before Sourcing Custom HVAC Sheet Metal From China?
Quotes for custom HVAC sheet metal from China often differ because each supplier fills gaps in the RFQ with its own assumptions on coating, gauge, or hardware. A complete package removes that guesswork, so price differences reflect process and capacity rather than different readings of the drawing.
The checklist below covers the nine items a China RFQ should state, with what each one controls in the finished part.
| ArtĆculo | What to state | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Grade and coating designation, such as Z275 | Corrosion life matches the design |
| Espesor | Millimeters with tolerance | Panel stiffness and like-for-like quotes |
| Tolerancias | ISO 2768 class plus tight callouts | Clear acceptance criteria at inspection |
| Articulaciones | Weld spacing, sealant & gaskets | Cabinet air tightness |
| Acabado | Color code, gloss & pretreatment | Color match and coating adhesion |
| Hardware | Insert type, thread size & approved brands or equivalents | Assembly fit on the line |
| Volumes | Prototype quantity & annual volume | Process route and pricing |
| Documents | First article report & material certificates | Lot traceability |
| Embalaje | Flat or nested, edge protection & corrosion-inhibiting wrap or desiccant | Panels arrive flat and free of white rust |
Landed cost drivers
A China unit price is often lower than a domestic one, but freight, packaging, duties, and any rework add to it. Landed cost, not unit price, is the figure to compare.
Freight weighs heavily on HVAC parts because formed housings and plenums are mostly empty space. Shipping panels flat or nested for local assembly cuts that volume.
Bulky building ductwork rarely justifies overseas freight, so HVAC ductwork fabrication stays largely local. Dense OEM parts such as brackets and drain pans pack tightly and ship economically.
Sample approval before production
A first article approved against the drawing before the batch starts becomes the reference for later lots. For HVAC parts, the approval package usually pairs the dimensional report with coating thickness readings and a color and gloss check against the agreed standard.
A trial fit on the buyerās own frame or gasket confirms what a report cannot, such as latch engagement and panel seal. The supplier then keeps a signed sample on file, and any later change to material, coating, or process route should come with a written notice before production.
How Yijin Solution Supports HVAC Projects
HVAC parts made in China can match domestic parts when the drawing, not shop habit, sets the specification. Measurable callouts let buyers compare an overseas quote line by line with a domestic one and judge each supplier on process control and landed cost.
Yijin SolutionĀ fabricatesĀ custom HVAC componentsĀ to customer drawings through laser cutting, bending, and welding, from prototype to production. Finishing runs in-house, so coated housing panels move from cutting through powder coating to final inspection under one quality system.
Its ISO 9001-certified quality system includes coating thickness and salt spray testing on site. Each HVAC drawing is reviewed for manufacturability at no cost before quoting, including material and finish callouts. Engineers and buyers canĀ upload their drawingsĀ to receive that review and a quote for prototype or production quantities.
HVAC Sheet Metal Fabrication FAQs
What is the minimum order for custom HVAC sheet metal parts?
Custom HVAC parts can typically be ordered from a single prototype, and the same drawing then scales to production batches. Unit price falls as setup time spreads across more parts.
How long does HVAC sheet metal fabrication take in China?
HVAC sheet metal prototypes typically take 3 to 7 days, and production batches take 2 to 4 weeks depending on complexity.
What is the largest HVAC panel that can be made in one piece?
Single-piece panel size depends on sheet width, cutting bed size, and press brake length. Common sheet sizes run 1,250 by 2,500 mm and 1,500 by 3,000 mm, so larger housings use split panels joined with sealed seams.
How much thickness does powder coating add to an HVAC part?
A single powder coat typically adds about 50 to 90 microns per coated surface. European architectural specifications compiled by the Powder Coating InstituteĀ set minimums of 50 to 60 microns. A slot narrows by twice the film build, which matters at hinges and gasket channels.
