A certificate list on a supplier’s homepage does not prove much by itself. Anyone can post logos for ISO 9001, IATF 16949, or AS9100D, and few buyers check what those marks require in practice.

Each mark stands for a specific set of shop floor controls. A buyer who knows what those controls are can tell a documented quality system from a marketing claim and can test that claim before an order is placed.

Sourcing from China raises the stakes. Many buyers never walk the shop floor before a first order, so the certification claim is often the only signal available, and it is worth reading correctly.

The value sits in the quality system behind each certificate: the inspection records, calibration certificates, and process documentation that an audit obliges a shop to keep.

What do Certifications Actually Require?

Certifications are not interchangeable. Each standard adds a specific layer of control on top of ISO 9001, built to manage a different category of risk. Knowing which layer applies to a given part tells a buyer exactly what to ask for.

ISO 9001 as the baseline

First Article Inspection: What it Covers and When it Applies

A First Article Inspection is the checkpoint that proves a machine setup can produce the part on the drawing before anyone commits to a full production run. A shop runs one whenever a new part, a new material, a process change, or a new tool enters the picture.

The report measures the finished piece against a ballooned drawing, point by point, and attaches the material certifications, surface finish readings, and functional test results that go with it. A ballooned drawing marks every dimension with a number, so each measurement ties back to one exact callout.

Aerospace programs often ask for this work in the AS9102 format, a structure the industry uses to keep first article data consistent across suppliers. Following the format is a reporting practice, not a claim to AS9100D certification.

Skipping the report does not save time; it moves the cost of an unproven setup into the full production run. A buyer who has never reviewed an FAI report should ask for a redacted sample before the first order ships.

PPAP Level 3: What does a CNC Supplier Submit?

PPAP, the production part approval process defined by the Automotive Industry Action Group, verifies whether a supplier’s process can maintain a consistent result at volume, order after order.

The framework defines 18 elements a supplier must document, from design records to process capability studies. Level 3 is the default submission: the part submission warrant, sample parts, and complete supporting data. It excludes only the master sample and checking aids, which a customer usually keeps on file instead.

For a CNC supplier specifically, the process flow diagram, the control plan, and the dimensional results tend to carry the most weight. They show how the part will be held and measured at volume.

Automotive buyers ask for it as standard practice, and industrial and defense programs increasingly request it for parts that carry a safety consequence if the process drifts. The split with FAI is simple: FAI proves the first part conforms to the drawing, while PPAP proves the process can repeat that conformance across a production run.

Why does In-Process Inspection Matter Beyond the Final Check?

Final inspection alone leaves a production run exposed. Catching drift mid-run keeps an entire batch from carrying an error through to the final check.

A disciplined shop checks the first piece of a new setup before committing to the rest of the batch. It then samples parts statistically throughout the run rather than waiting for the end.

CMM checkpoints belong in the middle of a production run as well, not only at pre-shipment. Random sampling on its own can miss a slow shift in tool wear, so the checkpoints are placed deliberately rather than spread evenly across the run.

In the United States, the reference body is the National Institute of Standards and Technology, known as NIST. Other countries maintain equivalent bodies, and the chain works the same way regardless of which one anchors it.

Without that documented chain, a reading of +/-0.01 mm is only as trustworthy as the gauge that produced it. A general ISO 9001 certificate says nothing about any one gauge; the calibration record for the specific instrument does.
