Magnesium CNC Machining FAQs

Magnesium presents unique challenges because it’s highly flammable in fine chip or dust form. It can ignite at around 473 °C (883 °F), much lower than aluminum or steel. This requires special safety systems, non-water coolants, and proper chip management. Despite these challenges, magnesium machining provides faster production than most metals due to its lower cutting resistance.

Magnesium parts can receive several protective treatments. Anodizing (DOW17, HAE, or Tagnite) creates a protective oxide layer that improves corrosion resistance. Chemical conversion coatings like chromate treatments offer good protection with minimal size changes. For maximum protection, we offer polymer sealants, powder coating, and E-coating. Each option is selected based on your part’s operating environment.

We prevent corrosion through multiple approaches. We start by selecting the right alloy—AZ91D offers better natural corrosion resistance. During the CNC machining of magnesium, we use pure cutting fluids to prevent contamination. After machining, we apply protective surface treatments like anodizing or chromate conversion coatings. For harsh environments, we recommend additional protection like E-coating or polymer sealants, plus design features that avoid water traps and contact with different metals. Never use water to clean magnesium parts as it can cause corrosion and potential fire safety issues.
