Copper CNC Machining - Faqs

Copper is highly valued in CNC machining due to its excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, and machinability. It’s ideal for parts used in electronics, automotive, aerospace, and telecommunications, where conductivity and durability are critical.

Copper can be challenging to machine because it is a soft and ductile metal, prone to gumming and burr formation during cutting. However, using the right tools, cutting speeds, and machining techniques, copper can be machined effectively with excellent surface finishes and precision.

Pure copper, such as C101, has superior electrical conductivity but is softer and more challenging to machine. Copper alloys, like C110 and C145, offer improved machinability, hardness, and strength while still retaining good conductivity. The choice of material depends on the application and the required properties.

CNC machining can produce high-quality surface finishes on copper parts, with options ranging from polished surfaces for better conductivity to more textured finishes for aesthetic or functional purposes. Post-processing techniques such as plating with silver or gold can enhance conductivity and prevent oxidation.

Copper parts can be machined to very tight tolerances with CNC machining, often within ±0.01 mm. The exact tolerance achievable depends on the part design, material grade, and machining process.
